By having the Firefox preferences file (prefs.js in Data\profile) open in a text editor, I had been able to determine that user_pref("browser.startup.page", 3); was being removed from the file. The culprit was indeed Tab Mix Plus as once this extension is disabled, the removal no longer occurred.
